Have you ever thought about how fish breathe in Aquariums? Sure, they breathe through their gills and the oxygen in the water, but the aquarium is a closed ecosystem, how does air get inside? The answer is through water aeration.

Fish breathe like we do, taking in oxygen through water and then expelling it through carbon dioxide, but until us, they don’t have trees under the sea to ensure that their oxygen supply is replenished. Underwater plants and sunlight take care of that in seas and oceans, but it’s not that easy for aquariums, who don’t have natural means to replenish the supply in their tanks and enclosures. 

Water aeration is the oxygenation of water to keep oxygen flowing while removing carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. Without fresh oxygen, fish and wildlife start to die, and no one wants that. That’s why there are so many fountains in parks, shooting water up into the air. Aside from looking stunning and providing a distraction for people, the water that is sent upwards collects oxygen.

Once the oxygen-filled droplets come back down, they mix with the water and insert the oxygen into the environment. Then the process continues throughout the day, as the aeration pumps for lakes do their job to keep the water freshly oxygenated.

Aquariums use the same thing, which is why you often see bubble machines in fish tanks and aquariums. The bubbles are filled with oxygen, and when they rise up to the top of the tank, they pop and mix the oxygen with the water. Several Aquariums also use continuous pumps and motors in their tanks that inject oxygen into the water continuously.

This keeps the fish alive and also simulates their natural environment, keeping them healthy for more aquarium goers to enjoy.
